Colombiere School – Phase 2

After a successful pilot exercise, Phase 2 of the school building programme begins.

Following the huge success of the HELP A POOR CHILD (Gambia) school, phase 2 to construct a second classroom has begun.

The school is located in a rural part of Gambia, at a place called Jarra Soma. In this place, if parents don’t have the time to make the long journey into the town centre, the children go without education. Other families just get their children doing odd jobs as school is not considered important.

So when the idea of constructing a school in the village was put forward by HAPC Volunteer, Drew Patel, nobody was quite sure how it would be received by the locals. Mattar Jallow, the HAPC Gambia Chairman was, however, instrumental in speaking to the local families about educating their children. Today, Mattar and Drew’s efforts have seen the pilot exercise of constructing just one single classroom turn into a huge success. Mattar has said that most parents have bought into the idea of getting their children receive basic education, like reading and writing – education they never received in their youth.

When the school was about to be opened, in just a matter of days, Mattar not only received the 30 names of children he was looking for but his requirement was oversubscribed by another 30 with the list growing every week.
As you can see from the photographs below, Phase 2 of the school construction project has now begun, with the ground by the first classroom being levelled in preparation for the building of Classroom number 2.

We are inviting sponsors to help with the inexpensive funding of this school building programme and the maintenance costs. Details will soon be published but we are very grateful to a HAPC fundraiser, Malcolm Smart. Malcolm is currently training to ride 300 miles from Newcastle to London in 24 hours. His training will see him complete a further 2200 miles. He is therefore looking for sponsorship of £1 for each of his 2500 miles he has to complete. At the time of writing this article, he had over £1,500 pledged! Please see his fund-raising page https://www.justgiving.com/malcolm-smart/ and help Malcom reach his target.
Thank you!
