Activities of Help A Poor Child (Calcutta) for 2006-2007
Altogether Rs. 66,455.00 was spent on Children’s Welfare to finance Coaching Classes, Medical and Educational Aid.
From June till September special coaching classes were organized in the evenings for 18 students who were weak in Maths, Science, etc. The students benefited much and two students actually passed for the first time in Hindi! All the 18 students stayed back after school, were given a warm nourishing lunch followed by a bit of rest and games. At the tuition break they were given a glass of milk and some snacks. However, as time went on the two teachers who were paid together Rs. 4,500 p.m. began to be irregular and also come very late for their classes. As the Principal was caught up in matters outlined further below she could not fill in for them and so the classes have been temporarily discontinued.
On Nov. 13 Class K.G. to IV were taken by all the staff for an excursion to the Millennium Park. On Nov. 15 the children from Class V upwards were taken for a guided study tour of the Victoria Memorial and the Birla Technological and Industrial Museum. Once again all the staff accompanied the children to see that they did not get into any harm or danger. The lovely bus drive, lunch and tea were enjoyed by all, the excursion extremely educational and the children’s behaviour drew compliments from passersby which made us all proud of them.
On Nov. 18 and 19 there was an infra school concert where the children had the opportunity to express their varied and rich talents. The concert helped us to appreciate the children better as persons.
There was a big turnover of staff this year as we had to streamline the staff to meet the staff requirements of the Education Dept.
In November we also conducted interviews for the post of Librarian and Games cum P.T. instructor. Both the selected candidates are valuable additions to the staff.
In order to meet the physical requirements of classrooms to obtain our N.O.C. the Nursery Class was done away with.
On 22nd March, 2007, we obtained our permanent NOC from the Fire SafetyDepartment. Besides investing in some further fire-safety equipment we had to put up a spiral staircase emergency exit in St. Joseph’s Block and an M.S. emergency staircase in St. Mary’s Block. Neither of the additions spoils the facade of the two buildings.
On August 19, 2006, we finally got our Occupancy Certificate for both our buildings from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, after much running around, red tape and harassment.
On Children’s Day each class set up a stall and we had a mini fete cum fancy fair. The school provided the snacks and ITC Ltd. provided the biscuits and sweets for the children. The children appreciated what the teachers had done for them.
Several trips were made to the Education Dept. at Bikash Bhavan to get our NOC for the school; this was very time-consuming. After each Hearing or visit we were given a fresh list of affidavits, resolutions, documents to produce. But now we have resolved not to pay a pice to grease anyone’s palms.
The running around for our NOC from the Fire Safety Department, and to get our Occupancy Certificate from the K.M.C. and our School.. N.O.C. from the Education Dept., put the cultural and other non-academic formative aspects of the children’s education on the back burner.
