The dinner-dance held at Athena Conference and Banqueting in Leicester Friday 25th November 2005 to raise funds for child victims of earthquake in South Asia was a huge success, in terms of attendance and fund raising.

HAPC (Leicester) representative, Abdul Razak Osman and Vasant Bakta (MrB) the main organisers, believe the amount raised currently stands at £10,245.

HELP A POOR CHILD would like to thank all those who supported the charity for this very worthy cause in helping poor children in the affected areas of the south Asia earthquake. The funds will be sent directly to assist with the continuation of existing projects and gift aid to those children in desperate need, especially during the very freezing conditions that they are facing at the moment.

For a first event of its kind, outside the annual London event, the funds raised were beyond expectations and demonstrates the solidarity, which exists amongst the community, especially following the devastation caused by the earthquake. These funds will all go directly to children who have suffered and are still suffering because of the natural catastrophes that have plagued the sub-continent. It is planned to ensure that the distribution takes place within a matter of weeks, using the existing network of HAPC in Northern India and Pakistan.

Boogiewala

“Boogiewala” – one of the many entertaining artists keeping the guests entertained with his wide range of talents

The event itself was highly entertaining, with a great time enjoyed by all who came with one purpose – to assist in raising badly needed funds.

Over 450 people attended on the night. Entertainment was provided by live music from Orchestra Music World, who arrived from India. Karibu a local band from Leicester and dancer Mr Boogiewala also provided the entertainment throughout the evening. Raffle prizes and a auction of signed autographs of the 1966 world cup photo frame of the England winning squad, two tickets to Dubai and many more items brought in over £2.500. The guests who paid £25 per ticket, enjoyed the three-course meal but, more importantly, they came to help the charity in any way they could to raise funds. We are very grateful to all those who attended.

Keith Vaz

Leicester East MP and HAPC Patron Keith Vaz, lending his support to the Earthquake Appeal

Derrick Pereira, Chairman of HAPC was present, as was Leicester East MP and HAPC Patron Keith Vaz, both of whom spoke of the importance of the work of the charity in the UK, as well as the wider community, working together for the benefit of the victims. It was stressed that the children, as always, are most vulnerable, and more must be done to address their particular plight. They congratulated the organisers and all those that supported and sponsored the successful event especially local business and individuals.

In terms of providing help, we shall be concentrating on children who have been orphaned or have lost some or all of their family members, and have no means of support as a direct result of earthquake.
