School Village project – Phase 2
HAPC Gambia chairman Matarr Jallow has reported that phase 2 of the school project is near completion and has sent us the photographs below showing its progress.
As can be seen, the major construction works have been completed with just the roofs to be built. Thereafter, the painting will be done (both exterior and interior) and then the long awaited classroom furniture ill be purchased for the two classrooms. Currently the children, without complaining, have been sitting on the floor! A new HELP A POOR CHILD Gambia sign board is now proudly displayed at the school entrance.
The school is now closed for the summer and it is hoped that by the time it reopens on 16th September, all the outstanding work will be completed in full. In the meantime, another teacher, a caretaker and night watchman will be employed to join the 2 teachers who were the first to join the school.
Part of the plans for the new term will be the official inauguration of the school, which will include the formal naming of Classroom 1 as DRUVE PATEL and Classroom 2 as MALCOLM SMART. It was unanimously agreed that Classroom 1 would be named after HAPC volunteer Druve, following his trip to Gambia in 2011 when he persuaded Mattar that HAPC would assist him in realising his dreams of helping the local village children. Malcom’s unselfish nomination of HAPC to benefit from his fund-raising 300 miles bike ride in which he pledged to raise a minimum £2,500 (sufficient to construct 1 classroom) made it an easy decision to name Classroom 2 in his good name. HAPC will now use Malcolm’s noble example to name future classrooms in the name of anyone who is able to pledge at least £2,500 towards this project.
