35th Anniversary message from Kenya

HAPC Kenya chairman’s 35th anniversary message.

It’s hard to imagine that, for some of the children assembled, this was probably going to be their only meal of the day.

“I first came across HELP A POOR CHILD through a chance meeting with Derrick Pereira in London back in 2005. He invited me to attend their AGM, where I learnt about the wonderful work they do for the poor children in Asia. I considered it an honour when Derrick, who was born in Kenya, asked me to look into setting up a branch on my return to the country in 2006.

One of the first programmes we organised was the distribution of clothes to poor children and their families. The joy that this programme brought to so many made me soon realise that I could do, and had to do, so much more.

With help and support from Melani Miyanji, a well-known dermatologist, I assembled a hard-working team who enthusiastically went about preparing our marketing material – a HAPC Kenya banner and T-shirts.

Then, with funds sent by HAPC UK, we purchased food and organised its distribution to a large group of poor and hungry children who patiently waited for the truck to arrive. The photographs show the value of such a simple but worthwhile programme. It is hard to imagine that, for some of the children assembled, this was probably going to be their only meal of the day.

We have since been carrying out similar programmes on a smaller scale as we await the registration of HAPC Kenya as a charitable organisation. Achieving this status will help us to freely operate within the laws governing charities in Kenya.

My sincere best wishes go to everyone at HAPC UK on reaching 35 years of helping poor children. I will be praying for you as you get together at the Gala Ball to raise funds for more of your projects so that you can continue with the vital and important work you do for our poor children.”
